Return to the Classic Hiking Route of the Southern Cross-Island Highway
Humming along the way, “Crossing over that mountain, chasing the dream long held in my heart, no longer will there be regret; crossing over that mountain, calling out to my companions, embracing the brilliance of the sunshine,” it feels as if we've journeyed back to a beautiful, simpler time.
The winding and enchanting Southern Cross-Island Highway offers breathtaking scenery shaped by dramatic elevation changes. As we explore its stunning landscapes, walking through tranquil mountain forests, the majestic alpine views grow more impressive with every step. Breathing in the crisp mountain air and gazing upon the green peaks and endless blue sky, one realizes how pure and natural happiness can be.
Heading eastward, we quietly admire the grandeur of the forested valleys and mountain ridges, crossing the highway’s highest point at 2,722 meters—Yakou. Along the way, we are treated to the magnificent views of Motian, Lidao, and Tianlong. Stepping lightly along the forest trail, we take in the natural wonders of Yakou’s rugged terrain, the mighty Xiangyang Cliff, and the spectacular Wulu Gorge.
Perhaps we’ll lock eyes with a wild Formosan macaque in a rare moment of connection. As the journey nears its end, a soothing foot soak in the natural hot springs of Liukou brings gentle warmth, while scene after scene of Southern Cross’s beauty plays before our eyes—leaving us with a full heart and the perfect ending to this classic journey.
